This is the home page of the LIGIA project. The Project has four partners, The Agder University College, Kristiansand, Norway (together with local schools and colleges in the Agder region), The Economic Society of Styria in association with the Pädagogisches Institut in Steiermark, Graz, Austria (together with local schools and colleges); Idioms Education and Training Partnership, UK, a specialist organisation for mounting training courses and monitoring educational activities; and Hughes Hall (the coordinating partner) a Graduate College of the University of Cambridge, UK with assistance from the University Faculty of Education
The project was designed to investigate how group learning pedagogy might be developed to promote the acquisition of social competences in young people in mainstream, vocational and lifelong education. One of its challenges was to devise strategies (Learning Islands) for a range of traditional subjects and provide appropriate assessment techniques for the individual student as part of a self-directed team.
A working definition of a Learning Island has been defined as:
A learning experience for a group of individuals working to investigate a task, question, problem or phenomenon where the individuals of the group take responsibility for democratically combining their efforts to achieve the defined purposes of the activity whilst also developing and assessing their own and their peers' social competences. (see Social Learning Career Chart for the range of curriculum areas investigated)
The Project has completed a three year study and has prepared its report. It is also preparing a publication of its philosophy and a substantial collections of its resources. Any organisation or persons interested in our work should contact the Director or one of the other partners. More details of how the project may help you can be viewed in the Ligia Flyer ( a pdf file).
